If you told me 6 months ago that I would be photographing a drift event in the parking lot of an abandoned amusement park, I would have thought you were just making it up. However, I was fortunate enough to have this opportunity this past weekend. The story of Freestyle Music Park is short-lived and mysterious, but the facts are: a park in Myrtle Beach opened in 2008 and closed in 2009 and has been largely untouched since. The coasters have been taken down, but besides the occasional vandalism the park looks like it would have back then. The owner of the property rents out the massive unused parking lots (for a hefty premium) to motorsports fanactics like the Catch My Drift! group out of Myrtle Beach. The rules for photographing this event were more strict than I would have liked, but that did not stop me from getting a handful of really fun shots. This was an event that coincided with “Mustang Week” which meant that there was also a smaller car show happening in the pits at the same time. The drift event was set up much like any other in there is a single track and they just run hot laps all day with a break for lunch.
